What to wear to a beachfront wedding

A beachfront wedding is a romantic and beautiful way to celebrate your special day, and many couples – including great numbers who are interested in Gibraltar weddings – opt for a destination wedding for this very reason.

Choosing the right outfit can, however, be a challenge – how do you ensure you look both stylish and appropriate?

To help, we have put together some tips on what to wear for a beachfront wedding. Whether you are a member of the happy couple or the wider wedding party, or simply a guest, we have the ultimate tips to help you pick the perfect look.

  • Think of the location

As you are attending a beachfront wedding, your outfit should reflect the tropical (or, in the case of Gibraltar, subtropical) and relaxed vibes of the beach.

To do this, opt for light and breezy fabrics such as linen or cotton in light colours to help keep you cool. Avoid heavy materials such as wool or velvet, which can be difficult to wear in hot weather and uncomfortable if there is a sea breeze.

  • Devise – or comply with – a suitable dress code

When you are planning your own wedding, you naturally have a certain amount of freedom to set out your desired dress code. But of course, you should show consideration for your guests, too.

If you are a guest, take a look at the invitation and note any dress code requests in order to ensure you stay within the guidelines. If there is no specific dress code, it is best to opt for something semiformal, such as a midi dress or smart trousers with a blouse.

Avoid anything too formal, such as a ball gown or tuxedo, as these are likely to be ‘over the top’ for a wedding near the beach.

  • Accessorise

Accessories are an easy way to add personality and sophistication to any outfit. For a beachfront wedding, look for natural materials such as seashells or jute to complete your look. It is also a good idea to consider lightweight jewellery, such as charms or beaded necklaces, that won’t weigh you down in the heat.

  • Choose comfortable shoes

Shoes should be comfortable and practical for a beachfront wedding – sandals are usually the best option if you intend to spend any time on the beach itself.

As we have pointed out previously here at Sweet Gibraltar Weddings, it is not possible to hold a wedding directly on the beach in Gibraltar, due to their status as a nature reserve. It is still possible, though, to visit the beaches independently during your time here, whether you are a member of the loved-up couple, or a guest.

If you do indeed decide to spend some time on the beaches themselves, avoid anything too high as you may find yourself sinking into the sand, and opt for something with a secure fit so that your shoes don’t get lost in the waves. If you want to be especially well-prepared, bring an extra pair of sandals in case your first pair gets wet.
