Something old, something borrowed, something you

A flowing white gown that you wear only once is becoming a symbol of unsustainable fashion. Being environmentally conscious about what we’re buying is becoming a priority for many brides-to-be. From ethical options to outfits that can be worn over and over, there are plenty of ways to find ‘the one’ for your big day.

Focus on a sustainable option that’s right for you

There are so many eco-friendly and ethical wedding ensembles out there that it can be difficult to choose. Opting to go sustainable for the day you say ‘I do’ doesn’t have to tick all the boxes except a theme that means something to you. It might be that a dress made from plant-based fabrics fits with your vegan ethos or one made by a fashion house that ensures it pays staff a living wage fits your social conscience. It might even be a rented dress or an upcycled second-hand one to reduce waste.

The outfit recycle

As well as shopping from green and ethical labels, consider the longevity of your purchase. Will it be something you can and will wear again? Steering away from wedding dress traditions such as long trains that are impractical as soon as you leave the service and one-time-only veils might be the answer. A more wearable look is a more sustainable purchase. Separates such as a long skirt, a top and a jacket can be worn when you get home. Individual statements can be kept to smaller items rather than the outfit itself, including the bouquet, hair accessories and shoes.

Think local

Before you start looking at the big bridal brands, consider boutiques in your area. A local designer will almost certainly produce ethically manufactured pieces. A small independent wedding dress shop is also likely to specialise in bespoke and custom-made gowns, separates and suits. You can work with them to specify eco-friendly fabrics and their outfits will inherently have a low carbon footprint.
