How do I get married in Gibraltar?

Gibraltar’s glorious weather and beautiful, rugged landscape make it a popular location for getting married. As a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar offers the familiarity and customs of a British wedding with the luxury of a Mediterranean setting. Here’s how to go about getting married in Gibraltar for those in the early stages of wedding planning.

Book your marriage ceremony

Given how popular a destination Gibraltar is for weddings, it’s vital that you book your wedding ceremony well in advance. You can marry either at the registry office or in an approved location outside. Registry office weddings typically take place only on weekdays between 10 am and 12 pm, but those at other locations can take place up till 6pm-7pm (Monday-Saturday).

Keep in mind that you need to book a registrar to conduct the wedding if it will take place at an outside location, so you’ll need to coordinate the availability of both the venue and the registrar. It can be incredibly useful to work with a wedding planner to make these arrangements. Here at Sweet Gibraltar Weddings, we liaise with all parties involved in your wedding to make the process as seamless as possible.

Apply for a Special Licence

People who are not residents of Gibraltar can get married with a Special Licence. To attain this you must present at the registry office in Gibraltar at least 24 hours before getting married. It’s essential that you stay in Gibraltar for at least one night immediately prior to or immediately following the wedding ceremony. When you visit the registry office you’ll need to provide the following documents:

– Birth certificate
– Passport
– Evidence of your overnight stay in Gibraltar, such as hotel booking forms or a statement by a resident of Gibraltar.

Widows and widowers must also provide the certificate of their previous marriage and the death certificate of their late spouse. Those who have been previously married must provide their previous marriage certificate (only on Brides to be) and the absolute divorce decree.
