Brexit will not affect marriages in Gibraltar

We hope you are all well and getting excited about your up and coming wedding plans or those of a loved one. Before we continue with this blog, we would like to take a moment to share our sadness about the events that took place in Westminster. We hope that you, our clients and your families, were all safe at the time. Our condolences and our hearts go out to the people affected by what happened.

Aside from the tragic events in Westminster, the latest big news concerns Brexit. With article 51 being triggered by the UK on Wednesday, people are asking how Gibraltar will be affected, and some of our clients are asking how it will affect their plans to get married on the rock. We would like to reassure you that Brexit will not affect marriages in Gibraltar nor will it stop Gibraltar being a preferred wedding destination.

The truth of the matter is that Gibraltar will be held in account in all Brexit negotiations with Europe. Spain is seeing this as an obvious opportunity to try and gain joint sovereignty over our rock. However, no matter what is negotiated, it is not in Spain’s interest to shut the border or impede access to the rock. Over 4,000 Spanish people come to work in Gibraltar every day. The economy of neighbouring La Linea depends on those people who have jobs here.

You may have heard on the news that Spain has threatened to block air space and access to Gibraltar but it is all scare mongering. It will not do it and the UK will negotiate in every which way possible so that Gibraltar keeps most, if not all, of its privileges.

So, please be rest assured that your favourite wedding destination will still be available for your weddings. Should anything change, we will inform you but we are not expecting any changes. Yes, you might experience longer delays at the border but that is very common on busy days anyway.
